Really convenient, doctor was super nice and even checked in a day before my appointment to see if I wanted to do it early. Then got my card in the mail. Only complaint is the price for renewal, alot of places are much cheaper these days, but the hassle of getting all my records to someone else, no thanks.

What is Medical Marijuana?

Medical marijuana is a term used to describe the use of the cannabis plant as a medication or herbal therapy. The cannabis plant has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. In recent years, there has been a resurgence in interest in the use of medical marijuana for the treatment of various medical conditions.

Medical marijuana is available in many different forms, including dried flowers, concentrates, oils and tinctures. Some patients may choose to smoke or vape the marijuana while others may prefer to use a vaporizer to inhale the active ingredients of the cannabis plant. Others may consume medical marijuana through edibles such as cookies, candy bars, or brownies.

Medical Marijuana Laws in Louisiana

Louisiana has some of the most restrictive laws governing medical marijuana possession and use in the country. In Louisiana, medical marijuana is only available to patients who are suffering from a handful of specific conditions, including cancer, muscle spasms, epilepsy, chronic pain/intractable pain, multiple sclerosis, wasting syndrome, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, HIV/AIDS, Crohn’s disease, and spastic quadriplegia.

Even patients who qualify for medical marijuana use in Louisiana are limited to possessing no more than 2.5 ounces of medical marijuana at any given time. Furthermore, patients must be diagnosed with a debilitating condition by two different doctors, who must also approve the patient’s use of medical marijuana and sign off on the patient’s application for a medical cannabis card.

If you are a patient in the Louisiana medical marijuana program, you may be able to grow medical marijuana at home for your personal use. There is a limit of 12 plants per qualifying patient, and each plant must be grown in an enclosed, locked space that prevents access by minors.

Louisiana Public Consumption Laws

Cannabis-related goods and infusions are not permitted in public places under laws governing public consumption. As a result, authorized patients must use cannabis at home.

Louisiana Cannabis DUI Laws

Even if you have a medical prescription for cannabis products, it is illegal to drive while using them or right after. DUI charges and a $300 fine may be levied against first-time offenders. The penalty rises to $500 if you have more than 14 grams on you. Additionally, a jail term of up to six months could be imposed on you.

How to Find a Louisiana Medical Marijuana Doctor

First, you can visit the website of the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) to obtain a list of doctors who have the necessary certification to recommend patients for medical marijuana. You can locate this information by clicking on the “Prescriptions” tab at the top of the home page and then selecting “Medical Marijuana Therapeutic Use” from the drop-down menu under Prescription/Therapeutic Use Programs. This will take you to a page that lists all qualified physicians and provides contact information for each one.

If you have a specific physician in mind, you can click on the name of his or her practice from the list provided by LDH. This will take you to another webpage with more detailed contact information for the doctor. This may include an address, phone number, and website.
